Update 3:41 PM

Delaware is now up on Northern Iowa 19-10 nearing halftime.

Update 3:37 PM

Central Florida wins the Conference USA Championship game over Tulsa 44-25.

Update 3:35 PM

Appalachian State recovers the onsides kick and goes 3-and-out, but they force Eastern Washington to use all of their timeouts. Eastern Washington once again drives down the field to put another touchdown on the board, making it 38-35. They now need the onsides kick as there is only 28 seconds to go and they have no timeouts.

Also, suddenly Delaware is up on Northern Iowa 12-10.

Update 3:20 PM

Eastern Washington is able to drive down the field to close the gap against Appalachian State to 38-28, but they took a long time with there only being 3:11 left in the game.

Eastern Washington is going to have to get their offense going. Their three touchdowns have been on a kickoff return for a touchdown, a fake punt, and a 14 yard drive after another long kickoff return. Eastern Washington hasn’t had a single long drive for a touchdown today. Meanwhile, Eastern Washington’s defense hasn’t been able to stop Appalachian State’s offense all day. They’ll need to do that if they want to win this game.

Update 12:47 PM

Navy goes up 7-0 on Army. Meanwhile, Appalachian State appears to be having an easier time this week than last week as they go up on Eastern Washington 14-0.

Update 12:39 PM

Eastern Washington gets deep into Appalachian State territory, but a big sack sets EWU back and ASU blocks the field goal.

Update 12:27 PM

Week 11 - Afternoon Games

10 11 2007

Update

Here are some of the big games coming up at 8, to round out the afternoon thread:  Kansas get into great position to sneak into the title game with Ohio State’s loss, but they have to get by Oklahoma State, which has shown streaks of greatness at times this season.

Boston College would like to rebound before their game with Clemson, and they’ll get a chance to do so against Maryland.

LSU should have it easy against Louisiana Tech.

Finally, in the lost game of the day, we have California vs. USC.  At the start of the season, people thought that this would be for a berth into the title game.  Now it’s for 3rd in the Pac 10.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech has pretty much put Florida State away as they take a 38-21 lead with just over 5 minutes to go.

4th time wasn’t the charm for Vanderbilt as they can’t pick up a 4th 4th-down conversion of the drive, and Kentucky wins 27-20.

Meanwhile, Arizona State takes the lead on UCLA 17-13.

Update 5:37 PM

Ohio State has it 1st and goal, and ends up turning the ball over, and it’s still 21-14 Illinois.

It’s starting to look like it could be a shootout in Columbus as Ohio State strikes again, and its 14-7 Buckeyes only 5 1/2 minutes into the game.

Update 3:55 PM

Illinois strikes right back to tie their game with Ohio State at 7. Cincinnati also goes up on Connecticut 7-0.

Update 3:45 PM

Mississippi upsets Alabama today 19-12. This makes Mississippi State bowl eligible.

In the meantime, one wouldn’t think that Navy would be a candidate for our loss-to-a-I-AA game of the week, but they’re currently tied with Delaware 21-21.

Update 2:18 PM

We’re looking at a couple of possible mild upsets today. Northwestern currently leads Purdue 17-14 while Iowa has now tied Michigan State at 17. Also, Colorado is starting to run all over Texas Tech 24-6.

Missouri is also up on Iowa State early 7-0.

Update 1:31 PM

West Virginia and Rutgers head towards Halftime with West Virginia leading 17-3. Wake Forest also leads UNC 17-3 at halftime. Also at halftime: Louisville leads Pittsburgh 14-0, Wisconsin leads Indiana 17-3, and Colorado leads Texas Tech 14-3.

Update 1:15 PM

I just saw an ad for the Big East called “someday…” and they went through a “someday” thing for each team, and one of them was “Someday, Syracuse and Pittsburgh will build on their great tradition” and at the end it said “someday is today.”

Um, sure. Syracuse is certainly building on their great tradition this year…

Update 1:03 PM

West Virginia fumbles the ball while going into the end zone, but recovers for the touchdown and now lead 14-0.

Also, Wisconsin leads Indiana 17-0 and Colorado leads Texas Tech 14-0.

12:50 PM

West Virginia strikes first against Rutgers and leads 7-0. Louisville is also deciding that they’ll play football again, jumping on Pittsburgh 14-0.

Kentucky, meanwhile, goes down early to Mississippi State 7-0.

Week 6 Final Report

7 10 2007

The upset of the day is easily Stanford taking advantage of a weak-looking Southern Cal and winning 24-23.  USC becomes the 2nd top 5 team to lose today.  The other Los Angeles team goes amiss as well as UCLA hands Notre Dame their first win of the season 20-6.

In rivalry games with conference championship implications, Oklahoma bounces back to defeat Texas in the Red River Shootout 28-21 to keep Oklahoma in the Big 12 South race.  Meanwhile, Texas A&M mounts a huge comeback, scoring 24 of the last 30 points to beat Oklahoma State 24-23.

In the SEC, newly minted #1 LSU scores with around a minute left to play to get by Florida 28-24.  Meanwhile, Tennessee runs all over Georgia  35-14 and now leads the SEC East along with South Carolina and Kentucky.  Tennessee is the only team who has played both Florida and Georgia.

In the ACC, Virginia Tech beat up Clemson 41-23.  That puts Clemson 2 games behind Boston College in the Atlantic Division while the two Virginia teams are the only remaining teams still undefeated in conference play in the Coastal Division.

In the Big 10, Ohio State made a statement against Purdue, winning 23-7.

In the Big East, Cincinnati shows that they are for real by getting past Rutgers 28-23.

Temple, Buffalo, and Army, three much maligned teams, all pick up wins today.  Temple defeated Northern Illinois 16-15, Buffalo ran over Ohio 31-10, while Army squeezes past Tulane in overtime 20-17.

Only three games are still in progress.  Tulsa leads UTEP late in the 4th quarter 47-41, Missouri is running all over Nebraska 41-6 with 10 minutes to go, and Hawaii leads Utah State 7-3 halfway through the 1st quarter.

Wake Forest 41, Duke 36

Games to Watch - Week 6

6 10 2007

This is a little late, so I’ll try to keep it short:

Kansas (4-0) at Kansas State (3-1) - 12:00 PM

This is a huge Big 12 North game, especially since the Northern Division actually looks like the stronger division, for once.  Can Kansas get to 5-0?  Kansas is one of the few undefeated teams still not ranked as well.

Wisconsin (5-0) at Illinois (4-1) - 12:00 PM

Much like the Kansas/KSU game, this game is very important in the Big Ten as Illinois is undefeated in the conference, and is very nearly undefeated overall.  This is a game in which Wisconsin could very easily get tripped up.  Given half the top-10 lost last week, Wisconsin is very aware that the same thing could happen this week.

Vanderbilt (3-1) at Auburn (3-2) - 12:30 PM

You’ve heard about Kentucky.  You’ve heard about South Carolina.  But did you know Vanderbilt was 3-1 as well?  If Vanderbilt could pull off the win, they would nearly complete the complete a shift which is turning the SEC inside-out.

Iowa (2-3) at Penn State (3-2) - 3:30 PM

Both of these teams are 0-2 in conference play and desperately need a win to have any sort of shot.  A loss here all but eliminates either of these teams from the conference race.

Oklahoma (4-1) vs. Texas (4-1) - 3:30 PM

Many people expected these teams to be 5-0 coming into today.  Oklahoma because they had been destroying everyone they had played and Texas because, well, they’re Texas, despite never looking all that good.  Both got upset last week so this is a rebound game both teams need.  Oh, and did I mention that the winner gets leg-up in the Big 12 South title race?

Georgia (4-1) at Tennessee (2-2) - 3:30 PM

With Florida losing to Auburn last week, it resets the SEC title race as all six SEC East teams have one conference loss.  That means the winner of this game is suddenly back into contention to win the SEC East title.  However, this game may be more important to the Volunteers who want to try avoid falling to 2-3 and looking like the may have their 2nd losing season in 3 years.

Virginia Tech (4-1) at Clemson (4-1) - 6:00 PM

This is a huge intra-divisional match-up in the ACC as both teams try to stay in their respective division’s races.  A loss by Clemson would put them 2 games behind Boston College - a margin not easily made up.  Things aren’t as bad for the Hokies, who would only be given their first conference loss if they lose, but they still don’t want to have to play catchup with Virginia and Miami.

Oklahoma State (3-2) at Texas A&M (4-1) - 7:30 PM

Along with the other Texas/Oklahoma game, this is a game which has major implications for the Big 12 South race as these two teams are the last two teams still undefeated in the conference.  Just like the Texas/Oklahoma game, the winner of this game will have a leg up in the Big 12 South race.

Ohio State (5-0) at Purdue (5-0) - 8:00 PM

This wasn’t a game many people were expecting to be so big, but it is as the winner, in conjunction with the Wisconsin/Illinois game, will be only one of three Big Ten teams still undefeated in the conference.  Just like Wisconsin, Ohio State is well aware of the troubles that Top-1o teams have been happy, and Purdue would be more than happy to join the upset club.

Notre Dame (0-5) at UCLA (4-1) - 8:00 PM

OK, this isn’t a game to watch as much as I want to see how low Notre Dame can actually go.  If they lose, they go to 0-6 with two Top 10 teams coming up.  Basically, if Notre Dame wants any chance to go bowling, they must, must, must, must win this game.  Otherwise, they are almost certainly staring at an 0-8 record when the Midshipmen come to town hoping to snap their 43-game losing streak.  Oh, and a loss would match Notre Dame’s longest losing streak at 8 games.

Cincinnati (5-0) at Rutgers (3-1) - 8:00 PM

Rutgers tries to avoid losing 3 in a row while Cincinnati will try to show themselves to be a bona fide  Big East contender.  Oh, and they’ll become bowl eligible with a win.

Florida (4-1) at LSU (5-0) -  8:28 PM

Probably the biggest game in the SEC today, Florida avoids getting 2 conferences losses and being put in serious jeopardy of not being able to win the Eastern Division while LSU tries flexing their brand new AP #1 ranking out.  An LSU loss would also suddenly put the SEC West back into play.

Nebraska (4-1) at Missouri (4-0) - 9:15 PM

Like the Kansas/KSU game, this game is an important match-up in the Big 12 North race as both teams have no conference losses yet.  Missouri has not won a division title since the Big 12 was formed, and win over Nebraska would put them in a position to have an opportunity to do so.

Mid-Afternoon Game Updates

29 09 2007

Update 7:09

California wins the battle of the west over Oregon 31-24 so set up a showdown later in the season with USC.

Kansas State also finishes the deal against Texas 41-21. So both big Big 12 South teams lose today. Finally Georgia Tech upsets Clemson 13-3. Tiger fans can’t be happy about that.

More Finals!

Kent State 33, Ohio 25
Louisville 29, N. C. State 10

Update 6:46

Looks like the Big East will once again be a three team race between…South Florida, Connecticut, and Cincinnati? Sure looks that way as Maryland now has a 10 point lead on Rutgers in the middle of the 4th quarter.

Also, Kansas State has pretty much taken care of Texas, now leading 41-21, also middle of the 4th.

Update 6:28

Well, that didn’t go well. Syracuse gets a sack, then 3 straight incompletions to hand the ball back to Miami at the foot of the endzone. Miami just runs out the clock to defeat the Orange 17-14.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech adds yet another field goal to expand their lead to 13-3 over Clemson in the 4th quarter.

Update 6:22

Miami goes 3 and out, running about a minute and a half off the clock. Syracuse gets the ball back on their own 11 with 2:29 to go.

Also, Maryland retakes the lead against Rutgers 20-17 late in the 3rd quarter and Kansas State drops another 10 on Texas to expand their lead to 34-21, now in the 4th quarter.

Georgia Tech tacks on a field goal to expand their lead over Clemson to 10-3 in the 4th as well. Meanwhile, California finds their offense in the 2nd half as they take the lead over Oregon 24-17 in the 4th quarter.

Finals:

Utah 34, Utah State 18

Update 6:16

Not Dead Yet: Syracuse drives down the field to put another TD on the board, closing the gap to 17-14 against Miami with 4 minutes to go.

Update 6:06

Miami tries to seal the deal by scoring a field goal and going up 17-7 in the middle of the 4th quarter. It could have been worse if it wasn’t for a goal line stand by the Syracuse defense. Syracuse has once again given up over 400 yards of offense.

In other games, Wisconsin expands their lead over Michigan State to 10 in the 3rd quarter: 34-24. Maryland also comes back and ties Rutgers at 17 in the 3rd quarter. Louisville is in another close game as N.C. State is behind, but still is in the game, down 16-10 in the 3rd. Finally, Texas has closed the gap to 24-21 against Kansas State.

Update 5:40

Wisconsin tacks on another field goal, as they lead Michigan State 27-21 at halftime. Rutgers retakes the lead in their game, 17-14.

Another final:

Nebraska 35, Iowa State 17

Update 5:14

The Syracuse from last week returns? Robinson throws a 43 yard pass to Mike Williams to pull the Orange to within seven, 14-7.

Also, Wisconsin takes a 24-21 lead over Michigan State, and Kansas State pulls to a 24-14 lead over Texas. Also, Oregon leads California 10-3.

Update 5:06

Syracuse avoids going down by three touchdowns by intercepting a Miami pass deep in Syracuse territory.

Maryland and Rutgers exchange touchdowns as the Terps continue to lead 14-10 nearing halftime. Michigan State and Wisconsin also swap another pair of touchdowns as they are tied up 21-21 in the 2nd quarter.

Update 5:00

Colorado pulls the huge upset over Oklahoma, winning 27-24 on a game ending field goal.

Update 4:44

Colorado recovers a fumble on an Oklahoma punt return, and follows up by putting it in the endzone to tie Oklahoma at 24 with 4 minutes to go.

Update 4:37

Maryland takes the lead on Rutgers 7-3 in the 2nd quarter. Also, Wisconsin and Michigan State exchange touchdowns, making that game 14-14, also in the 2nd quarter.

More:

Boston College 24, Massachusetts 14

Update 4:17

Syracuse appears to be their old self again as they go down another touch down to Miami (OH), who now leads 14-0. Syracuse has 81 yards of offense so far in the 1st half.

Elsewhere:

Georgia 45, Mississippi 17
Kentucky 45, Florida Atlantic 17

Original Post

Let’s start off with some more finals:

Indiana 38, Iowa 20
Army 37, Temple 21
Texas A&M 34, Baylor 10
Navy 31, Air Force 20
South Carolina 38, Mississippi State 21

Meanwhile, Boston College has a relatively close game with I-AA Massachusetts, leading 24-14 with about 8 minutes to go in the game. For once, Oklahoma is also being kept down to a reasonable number of points as they lead Colorado 24-10 after 3 quarters.

Elsewhere, Wisconsin and Michigan State are tied at 7 in the first quarter, Rutgers leads Maryland in the 1st quarter, Miami (OH) leads Syracuse 7-0 in the 2nd quarter, Texas and Kansas State are tied at 7 in the 1st quarter, and Clemson leads Georgia Tech 3-0 in the first quarter.

Early Game Updates

29 09 2007

Update 3:34

Michigan does indeed hang on against Northwestern, winning 28-16, not exactly an impressive win.  One has to wonder what is going on with the Big Ten.  Penn State losing to Illinois this week mixes things up again.  Is everyone in the Big Ten that good, or that bad?

Also, Notre Dame drops to 0-5 as they lose once again to Purdue 33-19.  Notre Dame is looking at possibly going 0-8 now as their next three games are against UCLA, Boston College, and Southern California.

Other Finals:

Central Michigan 35, Northern Illinois 10
LSU 34, Tulane 9

Update 3:29

Illinois pulls it off, defeating Penn State 27-20. Also, Michigan has put another touchdown up on Northwestern.

Also:

Connecticut 44, Akron 10

Update 3:16

Virginia Tech survives North Carolina 17-10.

Update 3:07

It’s over: Miami survives, beating Duke 24-14. Also, Ball State blows out Buffalo 49-14.

Michigan looks like they may avoid the upset as well as they’ve just taken the lead on Northwestern 21-16 with just over 9 minutes to go.

Update 2:59

Nevermind, Duke gets sacked on a 4th and 6 on the Miami 30, and then Miami scores a touchdown 2 plays later. Looks like Duke will let a possible upset slip through their fingers for a 2nd straight week.

Update 2:52

Will Duke beat Miami (the Florida one)? They’re only down by 3 with 4 minutes to go, but they’re in Miami territory and driving…

Original Post

Sorry for not posting until now, but I’ve been busy with other stuff this morning.

I looks like quite a few good teams are having a lot more trouble than they should be in the early round of games, with some possible upsets looming. Here are the games going on right now:

Virginia Tech 10, North Carolina - 3rd Quarter
Northwestern 16, Michigan 7 - 3rd Quarter
LSU 10, Tulane 9 - 3rd Quarter
Illinois 24, Penn State 17 - 3rd Quarter
Miami 10, Duke 7 - 3rd Quarter
Indiana 21, Iowa 7 - 3rd Quarter
South Carolina 17, Mississippi State 14 - Halftime
Texas A&M 10, Baylor 3 - Halftime

Notre Dame looks like they’re heading to be 0-5 as they trail Purdue 23-6 in the 3rd quarter. Meanwhile, Temple is trying to win their first game in a while, as they are tied-up with Army at 21, also in the 3rd Quarter

Games to Watch

29 09 2007

Here are today’s games to watch:

Penn State (3-1) at Illinois (3-1) - 12:00 PM

Believe it or not, Illinois is 3-1, and is a very close game with Missouri from being 4-0.  Illinois is quickly showing themselves to be a team that cannot be taken lightly.  Meanwhile, Penn State is coming off a disappointing loss to Michigan.  I’ll be interested to see how this game turns out.  How good is Illinois?

Notre Dame (0-4) at Purdue (4-0) - 12:00 PM

Can Notre Dame get a win? This week is another tough week as they travel to Purdue.  Looking at Notre Dame’s remaining schedule, this is a must-win game.  If Notre Dame cannot pull the upset against Purdue, they’re looking at being 0-8 going into the Navy game.

Mississippi State (3-1) at South Carolina (3-1) - 12:30 PM

Yes, Mississippi State is 3-1, with wins over Tulane, Auburn, and Gardner-Webb.  Ok, those are really impressive wins, except for maybe Auburn and this will be Mississippi state’s first true test of the season (they were merely sacrificial lambs against LSU).  South Carolina is looking to rebound from their loss against LSU.

Syracuse (1-3) at Miami-OH (1-3) - 3:00 PM

After their stunning upset at Louisville last week, can Syracuse rebound, or will they fall right back into the hole they were in after their first three games.  Meanwhile, Miami needs to get out of a 3-game losing streak themselves.

Michigan State (4-0) at Wisconsin (4-0) - 3:30 PM

This game as Big Ten title implications.  Wisconsin just survived Iowa last week, and now face an even better looking Michigan State team.  Meanwhile, Michigan State will face their first real test of the season.  The winner of this game definitely has a leg-up on fighting for the Big Ten title.

Maryland (2-2) at Rutgers (3-0) - 3:30 PM

After West Virginia’s loss last night and Louisville’s lost last week, Rutgers is the Big East’s last hope of getting a team into the BCS Championship Game. However, they’re facing what can be a very tricky Maryland team this week.  Maryland has yet to win a good game yet this year, however, by they fared better than expected against West Virginia, and were beating up Wake Forest before they blew that game.  Rutgers should win, but they can’t overlook Maryland.

Kansas State (2-1) at Texas (4-0) - 3:30 PM

Kansas State is thisclose from being 3-0, but haven’t really beaten anyone impressive, though they have won impressively.  Texas, on the other hand, has looked very vulnerable all season, though they have kept winning.  Texas just escaped in both of their games against Arkansas State and Central Florida.  TCU was a possible early-season upset for Texas, but they pulled that game out.  Has Texas finally found their grove?  If note, Kansas State is definitely a worth enough of an opponent to leave Austin with a win.

Clemson (4-0) at Georgia Tech (2-2) - 3:30 PM

Georgia Tech has had two tough losses in a row while Clemson comes in trying to keep up with Boston College in the ACC Atlantic division race.  I still think Georgia Tech is a team one can’t take lightly, so Clemson has to watch out.

California (4-0) at Oregon (4-0) - 3:30 PM

This is probably the game of the week, and appears to be the only game between ranked opponents this week.  This is a huge game in the Pac 10, as the winner gets a leg up on 2nd place in the conference, a BCS bid, and a chance to upset USC for the conference title.

Southern Cal (3-0) at Washington (2-2) - 8:00 PM

Washington started the season with two good looking wins, then suddenly lost two in a row.  Will Washington rebound?  This may be a tricky game for USC and a possible upset if Washington can get their game back together.

Auburn (2-2) at Florida (4-0) - 8:00 PM

Auburn is in desperate win of turning their season around.  They pulled the upset against Florida last season, though Auburn was a much better team last season.  Florida should win, but this is still an upset watch.
